Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy
Virtual psychoanalytic psychotherapy for adults in Maryland, New York, and New Jersey seeking deeper understanding, healing, growth, and lasting change.
Therapy that helps you get curious about yourself.
If you are here, something in your life is probably not working the way it used to—or the way you want it to. Maybe you feel anxious, overwhelmed, disconnected, stuck in the same relationship patterns, or tired of trying to hold everything together.
You may not know exactly what is wrong. You may only know that something feels off.
Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is a space to slow down and think about what is happening beneath the surface. Together, we will wonder about your emotions, relationships, hopes, fears, memories, and the ways you have learned to cope with difficult experiences.
This work is not about being “fixed.” It is about understanding yourself more fully, so you can have more choice in how you live your life.
What is Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy?
Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is talk therapy that looks beyond the immediate symptom or problem. Of course, we will pay attention to what is painful right now—anxiety, depression, eating concerns, relationship struggles, or feeling lost—but we will also wonder about why these experiences may be showing up in your life.
There is usually a reason behind the ways we think, feel, and behave. Sometimes those ways of coping helped us get through something difficult. At another point in life, though, they may begin to feel limiting, painful, or out of our control.
In our work together, we will make space to understand those patterns with more care and less judgment.
How Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy can help
Understand why certain emotional or relationship patterns keep repeating
Make sense of anxiety, depression, eating disorders, or intense emotions
Explore how early relationships may be affecting your present life
Feel more connected to yourself and less controlled by your reactions
Build more awareness around your needs, boundaries, and relationships
Create greater calm, clarity, and freedom in your life
Is Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy right for you?
This may be for you if
This work tends to be a good fit if you're curious about yourself — even if that curiosity feels new, or a little uncomfortable. Maybe you're caught in a pattern, in your relationships, at work, or in your sense of self, that you can't quite explain. You're looking for something deeper than a quick fix, and you're ready to take the time to understand what's going on beneath the surface, even if you don't have every answer yet.
You do not need to be in crisis. You do not need a diagnosis. And you do not need to be "sick enough" to seek therapy.
This may not be the fit right now if
This approach may not be the best fit if you're looking for very short-term, highly structured treatment focused on one immediate goal. It may also not be enough support if you need a more intensive level of care than outpatient therapy can provide.
That doesn't mean there's anything wrong with you, or that this work could never be helpful — it may simply mean a different type of support is needed first.
What Sessions Are Like?
Sessions are a consistent place to speak openly and think together. I will listen closely, ask questions, offer observations, and help you make connections between your past and present experience.
You direct where you want to go and what you want to work on. I may make a suggestion, observation, or interpretation, but this is your treatment.
We will also pay attention to the here and now. Slowing down, reflecting on your thoughts, and learning to observe rather than react can help you feel more grounded in the present—instead of feeling pulled into pain from the past or fears about the future.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is psychoanalytic psychotherapy?
Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is talk therapy that looks beyond your immediate symptoms to understand the patterns underneath them. For example, instead of only managing anxiety in the moment, we explore where it comes from and what it's been protecting you from — often rooted in early relationships and experiences.
How is psychoanalytic psychotherapy different from other types of therapy?
It goes deeper and slower than approaches focused on quickly changing one behavior or thought. Rather than only managing symptoms like anxiety or disordered eating, we look at what's driving them, so the change we create tends to last, rather than needing to be actively managed again later.
How often are psychoanalytic psychotherapy sessions?
I see psychotherapy patients a minimum of twice a week, and don't take on patients for less than once a week. More frequent sessions allow for deeper, more consistent work — creating room to notice patterns as they're happening, rather than only recalling them after the fact.
Do I need a diagnosis or referral to start psychoanalytic psychotherapy?
No — you don't need a diagnosis, a referral, or to be in crisis to begin. This work is a good fit if you're curious about understanding patterns in your life more fully, even without a specific problem you can name yet.
