Psychoanalysis
Virtual Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy for adults in Maryland, New York, and New Jersey seeking deeper self-understanding and lasting change.
A deeper, more intensive way to know yourself.
You may have been in therapy before. You may have read the books, learned the skills, and understood some of your patterns intellectually—yet something still feels unresolved.
Maybe you keep finding yourself in the same relationships, having the same painful reactions, or feeling a familiar sense of emptiness, fear, anger, or disconnection. You may know what you “should” do, but feel unable to understand why it is so hard to do it.
Psychoanalysis offers a more intensive space to explore these questions. It is an opportunity to move beyond simply knowing about yourself and toward understanding how your internal world, relationships, and past experiences may be shaping your present life.
What is Psychoanalysis?
Psychoanalysis is an in-depth form of psychoanalytic treatment that usually involves meeting multiple times each week.
The increased frequency gives us more space to notice what comes up over time: thoughts that seem random, feelings that are difficult to name, dreams, memories, reactions, and the ways you experience the relationship between us.
This is not about forcing insight or digging for something dramatic. It is about allowing your thoughts and feelings to unfold, then becoming curious about what they might mean.
Psychoanalysis takes time and patience. There is no way around that. But it can create room for a deeper, more lasting kind of change.
How Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy can help
Understand longstanding emotional and relationship patterns
Explore persistent feelings of emptiness, shame, anger, fear, or disconnection
Make sense of struggles with identity, self-worth, and sense of self
Understand how unconscious patterns may be affecting your choices and relationships
Work through the lasting impact of early relationships, attachment trauma, or loss
Develop a stronger capacity to reflect on your emotions rather than become overwhelmed by them
Create more agency, freedom, and choice in your life
The goal is not perfection. It is to know yourself more fully and have a more honest, compassionate relationship with who you are.
Is This the Right Fit for You?
This may be for you if
This may be a good fit if you're ready for a more intensive, sustained form of treatment and can make real space in your life for multiple sessions each week. Maybe you've tried therapy before and are looking for a deeper process, or you're deeply curious about your internal world and the recurring patterns in your relationships, work, or emotional life that feel hard to change. You're willing to stay with questions that may not have immediate answers.
You do not need to be in crisis to begin psychoanalysis. You do not need a diagnosis. You only need a desire to understand yourself more fully.
This may not be a fit right now if
Psychoanalysis may not be the right fit right now if you're looking for brief treatment, immediate symptom relief, or a highly structured approach. It may also not be possible if the time, emotional energy, or financial commitment of multiple sessions each week doesn't fit your life at this moment.
This isn't a failure or a judgment. Psychoanalytic psychotherapy may be a more supportive place to begin, and psychoanalysis can remain an option for the future.
What are Psychoanalysis Sessions Like?
Psychoanalysis is a collaborative process, but it is also a very personal one. I will listen, wonder, ask questions, and offer observations or interpretations when they may be useful. You bring your thoughts, feelings, experiences, and whatever else comes to mind.
We will pay attention to what happens in your life and to what happens between us. The therapeutic relationship can become a place to understand how you experience closeness, conflict, trust, disappointment, dependence, and vulnerability.
Some days, the work may feel clarifying. Other days, it may feel confusing, strange, or uncomfortable. That is often part of the process. Together, we will make room to think about it rather than rush past it.
